Dandelions - More than weeds

Every year weedkillers are sold for the purpose of killing dandelions and other "weeds". 
This is not only toxic for you, your family and pets but it kills one of nature's gifts.

Did you know that dandelions are actually one of the healthiest herbs?

For centuries dandelions have been used to aid in digestion, cleanse the liver, ease gallstone pain and lower blood pressure. 

This free plant grows in everyone's yard and can easily be used to maintain your health. 

What part can be used?

Every part of the dandelion can be used.

The roots are dried and used to make tea, which has a very earthy taste. 
Some may not care for the flavor, but honey could be added to help with the taste.
Dandelion tea may also be used as a healthy alternative to decaf coffee.

Dandelion greens
The leaves can be eaten raw in salads or sauteed and used in your favorite soups or dishes. They have a mild taste, kind of a cross between romaine and kale.

The yellow flowers and stems are great sauteed in butter and added to salads or your favorite dishes. - They can also be fried in a light batter for a little bit of crunch.

When I was young, my grandmother taught me that dandelions are very good for you. 
I used to cringe when she would saute the flowers and add them to our salads with the leaves. 
I didn't care for the taste and thought it was really weird to eat weeds..
Little did I know that one day I would be relying on them to help me with gallbladder problems. 

The flowers can also be used to make a salve to help with muscle strain and inflammation. 


Dandelion Salve 
Print Recipe

1/2 Cup dandelion oil (see below)
2 Tbsp Beeswax pellets 
1 Tbsp Shea butter or coconut oil (optional) (affiliate links)
10-30 drops essential oil (optional) (lavender is soothing, but you could use any scent you like)

Heat Beeswax in a double broiler or in a bowl over a pot of boiling water.
When the beeswax is melted add the dandelion oil, shea butter or coconut oil (if using)
Whisk together until blended.
Remove from heat and add essential oils (if using)

Pour into tins or a jar that has an air tight lid and allow to cool.
Can be used on sore muscles, as chap-stick and dry skin.


Dandelion oil -

1 cup dandelion flowers
1 1/2 cup oil (olive oil, almond oil, Jojoba oil or any carrier oil you like)

Air dry the flowers overnight (this will remove some of the moisture) 
Place flowers and oil into a sauce pan and simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours.
Strain into a jar and allow to cool.

Notes: Make sure the flowers have not been sprayed and have not been grown next to roads or sidewalks where they could have picked up pollutants.
